About Kherson, Ukraine
Kherson was founded in 1778 as a fortress, on the Dnepr (Dnipro) River. Kherson is situated along the high right bank of the Dnepr River, the area where Dnepr runs into many branches and forms many islands. Because of its convenient location, the city became a cradle of the Black Sea fleet of Russia. Kherson's location on the Black Sea makes it an ideal port city. The city has both a river port and a seaport.
The city's large railway junction connects Kherson with Moscow, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Simferopol and other cities in Russia and the Ukraine. The population of Kherson is about 402.9 thousands and the territory is about 100 square km.
Kherson has rich culture and traditions. Among the places to visit are Spasskiy cathedral (built in 1806), Svyatodukhovskiy cathedral (built in 1836), Chernomorskiy (the Black Sea) hospital (created in 1803-10 by Russian architect Zakharov). Besides, Kherson has many parks and is one of the greenest cities in the Ukraine.
