Ukraine was one of the most sporting Republics in the former Soviet Union. World and Olympic Games champions such as gymnasts Borys Shakhlin, Yurii Tytov, Larysa Latynina, Polina Astakhova, and athletes Valerii Borzov, Vira Kriepkina and other famous Ukrainian sportsmen and sportswomen, as well as the Kiev soccer team "Dynamo", and women's handball team "Spartak", are known around the world.
In 1993, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and the National Federation of Individual Sports became full-fledged members of the respective international sports organizations. Ukraine was granted the right to participate in all international competitions and Olympic Games by separate teams.
In 1994, Ukraine as an independent state, took part in the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer for the first time in its history. Oksana Baiul, who won in singles figure skating, was the first Olympic champion of Independent Ukraine.
Within two years after Lillehammer, the Ukrainian national team made its debut at the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia (in the US). The team consisted of 233 sportsmen and was 9th among 194 participating nations. The Ukrainian athletes took part in 24 events, in 10 of which they won 9 gold, 2 silver and 12 bronze medals. At the Para-Olympic games, the Ukrainian team won 1 gold medal, 4 silver medals, and 2 bronze.
Among all Ukrainian sportsmen, a few of the best known are Olena Vitrychenko, Serhiy Bubka, Volodymyr and Vitaliy Klychko, Victor Petrenko, Lilia Pidkopaieva, Andriy Shevchenko and Yana Klochkova.
Indoubtedly, one of the main sport events of 2004 was Olympic Games in Athenes. Yanna Klochkova has won two gold medals and has got 5th place in the list of the best sportsmen of Ukraine for all times since 1952. In free style wrestling in a weight category of 66 kg. nobody was equal an Ukranian Elbrus Tadeev. 47 sportsmen of Ukraine won 23 medals - 9 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze and have got 12th places among 212 countries.
